Gun Shop Where Guns Used by Adam Lanza Were Sold Loses License

Thankfully there was no filibuster of pending gun control legislation in the Senate today — yes, reality bites for the gang of 15 Senate Republicans who threatened to do so. Of course much to the disgust of some of my liberal friends, the current bill doesn’t contain an assault weapons ban nor any measures to outlaw high-capacity magazines — you know, pretty much the same type of instruments of death used by Adam Lanza last December? However, the bill does seek to strengthen background checks for gun purchases to eliminate the gun show loophole, and the ability to purchase firearms via the internet without a background check. It’s not “universal” as once sought, as said background checks would exclude gun sales by private owners to friends and family members That’s right, the current legislation only targets commercial gun sales.

This is a step in the right direction since currently 40% of all gun sales in America do not include a background check. From all indications, said proposed legislation is set to pass the Senate. But, there’s no word as of yet as to how House Speaker John Boehner plans to play this one out in the House of Representatives. Speaking of which, checkout how the very gun store in Connecticut where firearms used by Lanza in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that left 27 people dead — including Adam Lanza himself — were in fact purchased, has lost its license this week.

This from WFSB:

Adam Lanza, 20, who shot 26 people dead, 20 of them schoolchildren aged five to ten, and then shot himself at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut,

EAST WINDSOR, Conn. (AP) — Federal authorities say a Connecticut gun shop that legally sold weapons used in the Newtown school shootings lost its federal firearms license after the December massacre because of hundreds of violations over the past several years.

A document prepared by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives explains why Riverview Gun Sales in East Windsor lost its license. Some of the hundreds of violations included letting a felon buy ammunition and selling firearms without background checks. The document was obtained Wednesday by WFSB-TV.

Riverview lawyer Rob Altchiler told the TV station that shooter Adam Lanza’s mother, Nancy Lanza, bought the Bushmaster rifle used to kill 20 first-graders and six adults from Riverview, as well as a Sig Sauer handgun found at the school. Altchiler disputed the violations were serious enough to warrant license revocation. (source)

Way to go enforcing the law! As good, and as rare as it is for the ATF to revoke licenses to sell firearms, something tells me that there will be many idiots in the pro-gun crowd who may see this as Obama trampling on the U.S. Constitution. To them, this is yet another way of the government infringing upon their right to bear arms. Never mind the fact that the gun store in question committed at least 500 violations. To them, much like any proposed legislation to enact new gun control legislation, this is yet another example of big government getting in the way of responsible gun owners. Yep, never mind that the 2011 inspection by the ATF shows that employees of the Riverview store faled to do the following:

  • Allowed a man who said he was a felon to buy ammo and handle firearms.
  • Let someone buy a firearm and didn’t do background check until the next day.
  • Sold firearms to two people without checking if they were prohibited from buying.

Nope, never mind something as small and insignificant like breaking the law. All that should matter is that any and everyone (including al-Queda terrorists) should be able to purchase guns without scrutiny. Why? Because having to be subjected to a background check is too much like the advancement of tyranny. And lord knows we can’t have that in the land of the free and the home of the brave, right? I don’t know about you, but it boggles my mind to understand of gun control.
