Mark O’Mara: Zimmerman Trial Was Not About Race

Jul 16, 2013 2 Comments by

I’m not sure whether you would agree with George Zimmerman’s attorney, Mark O’Mara. But according to O’Mara, Zimmerman’s actions on the night in question was not racially motivated. Much has been made about race and the judicial system since Zimmerman’s “not guilty” verdict. And many people are using the outcome of this trial to express their disdain for the history of injustice as it applies to African-Americans here in the America.  On this blog we’ve written about said injustices on many occasions, and a quick search might be enough to convince you if needed.

mark-omara-zimmermanIn the following interview, Mark O’Mara acknowledges this fact. However, he stands firm on his belief that the Zimmerman trial had nothing to do with race. According to O’Mara, of all the people involved in the case, having practiced law and represented many African-Americans, he knows all too well the inequality that exists within the judicial system. I’m not sure if what he says will convince many of you, but I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter in the comment section below. My guess is that if you’re black like me and are forced to pack a chunk of concrete on the off-chance that you may be racially profiled, stalked, and pursued by someone like Zimmerman you’d say that O’Mara is dead-ass-wrong. In fact, you might even say that he’s racist for his statement; not to mention how he played the race card by putting the Trauyvon Martin family attorney, Benjamin Crump, on blast for what he sees as race-baiting (watch video here).

As for what I think? Check out our last episode of Madness & Reality Radio to get it (here).

I listened to the tape of the screams for help and there was no question in my mind that these were the screams of a young person, there is a query in the screamer’s tone at one point that no 29 year old being attacked by a youth would ever vocalize. Only a child could be so innocent as to be capable of using such a tone. It’s a “how can you kill me, I’m just a kid” tone. An adult isn’t going to plead for his life similarly. The entire defense is built on the fact that no one saw what happened. The fact that voice recognition technology was deemed inadmissible hugely helped the defense’ case. The prosecution was left with little to work with, but still I think they could have tried harder. O’Mara pretends he couldn’t hear the evidence that we all heard, but clearly not all of us can admit we heard. He’s pretentious to the hilt. His interview of Mrs. Martin about what she hoped she heard is so belittling I instantly wondered how this guy sleeps at night. I am embarrassed as an adult, that the jury, who are capable as adults of being able to distinguish the qualities of sounds coming from children and teens vs from adults in distress, were not be called upon by the prosecution to identify the sound of a 17 year old vs the sound of a 29 year old. I am embarrassed as a woman that six women who are specialized as mothers, grandmothers, aunts, babysitters and sisters did not have the moral integrity to bring this feminine perspective to bear on their own in the sequester of the jury.

The new game is for white racists to be as racist as they can be without openly admitting to it. This explains all the epithets of “thug”, “punk”, “hoodlum”,”junkie” etc being publicly hurled at Trayvon Martin. Of course we know what some white people say about him in private.
