Tim Thomas: White Privilege Says He Doesn’t Have to Go to the White House, But it’s not Racial

Jan 24, 2012 21 Comments by

You know what: I’m really sick of the emergence of this “angry white man” thingy that has emerged singe president Obama has stepped on the scene. It’s like all of a sudden white men everywhere are full of resentment. Wife burnt the toast? Ugh, it’s that Kenyan bastard Barack Hussein Obama’s fault. Lost a sock in the laundry? God damn you, Barack Obama! Senate Republicans block a bill to prevent the outsourcing of jobs while you’re unemployed? That fucking Barack Obama is the freaking anti-Christ! Not only that, he’s a Muslim who worships Karl Marx and Idi Amin! I mean, the shit is crazy, right? But of course it is; and, that’s why you have people like Newt Gingrich spreading the political meme of white resentment. Yeah, forget the economy being shitty as a direct result of  years of suicidal federal policies that never had regular people in mind. What’s important, is to push, and buy in to the lies and disinformation, that paints president Barack Obama as the portrait of everything that’s wrong with America.

Yep, that’s white privilege for you; it’s side effects are self-righteousness, and amnesia.

Speaking of which, the latest “angry white man” to make my ass itch is none other than NHL’s Boston Bruins goalie, Tim Thomas. Just in case you don’t follow the sport of hockey. Like me, you probably never heard of Tim Thomas the NHL goalie. Or. you probably wondered what the hell is Tim Thomas the Black dude who once played for the New York Knicks doing playing hockey these days? But don’t worry, there’s more than one Tim Thomas; and yes, he’s a white, guy. Not just an ordinary everyday white guy mind you. He is the goalie of the Stanley Cup winning Boston Bruins. So yeah, he’s not only well known among hockey fans. He’s also a tad bit wealthier than the average white guy in America.

So why am I mad at Tim Thomas? Well it damn sure isn’t because I’m envious of him an wealth and success as Mitt Romney would have you believe. I’m upset because he recently made a decision not to visit the White House with the rest of his team, as is often tradition for winners of national championships to be honored there. No, it’s nothing new really; winning teams in professional and amateur sports have been visiting the White House and meeting with the president forever. Hell, most of them come bearing gifts as a matter of fact. Like I said, this is an American tradition as apple pie, hot dogs, and chitlins at Thanksgiving dinner, But somehow, Tim Thomas decided to break tradition as a form of protest against the government by not attending. On his Facebook page, he has offered the following statement and reason for his actions:

I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.

This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.

Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.

This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic. TT

OK, so Tim Thomas is mad, and Tim Thomas felt the need to protest. Good for him! If you’ve been reading this site long enough, you’d probably know that I’m down with raising hell, marching in protest, and or even tying myself to a tree to make a point. OK, well maybe not tying myself to a tree like white folks do, but you get the point. I do believe in the democratic tradition of collective or individual protest and activism. However, my problem with Tim, is that I don’t know what in the hell is he protesting. I mean, his statement above has kinda left me hanging. No seriously, what exactly is he talking about? What is it specifically that the government has done, that he is upset about? Why the need to disrespect the White House? And then to hide behind the veil of the first amendment and “freedom of speech,” as many are defending him and his actions (?). Yeah, that shit is pissing me smooth the fuck off. It is because something tells me that if president Jim Crow was in office, this wouldn’t happen.

But instead it’s president Obama, so quite naturally the White House has all of a sudden been devalued, and not worthy of any respect. But hey, this is what white privilege is all about. White privilege is what took Muhammad Ali’s title away and wanted to throw him in jail for refusing to go to war in Vietnam.White privilege said Tommie Smith’sBlack Power Salute” at the 1968 Olympic medal ceremony was un-American, disgusting, and worthy of Tommie Smith and John Carlos being expelled from the Olympic games, and recieving death threats when they returned home.

You see, white privilege says that political statements, such as the one made by Tim Thomas, unlike any made by African American athletes, is acceptable. Not only acceptable, but protected without fear of retribution or consequence. White privilege says, “so what he’s the first Black president… he ain’t nothing special.” And it is this same white privilege which makes it acceptable for an appointed politician, Rep. Doug Landhorn, to skip out on the president’s State of the Union speech. So yeah, I’m pretty pissed off right now; unlike some of you, I’m not as privileged. I’m not as privileged to hide behind the first amendment like supporters of Tim Thomas have done. One has to wonder if he were a Black athlete, if he’d be given a pass pretty much like some of our elected politicians here in America in the age of Obama. As far as I’m concerned, all you “angry oppressed white men” can go spray yourselves with water hoses, beat yourselves in the head with police night sticks, and get bitten by racist German Shepherds. At the end of the day, all this angst is just a projection of your fears and insecurity of loosing your foot hold as society changes.

This might not be true for Tim Thomas. His disrespectful form of protest may have nothing to do with president Obama and or his policies. Instead,  other than it being reflective of the angst of the typical low0information voter easily influenced by today’s sound-bite politics and the puppeteers who influence their decisions and actions. Tim Thomas may be a self-centered asshole athlete just attempting to be an ultra-cool hipster. You know, sorta like Kelly Clarkson endorsing Ron Paul?

You make a great point about the Black athletes’ legitimate protests being criticized as un-American yet a White hockey player; who is not part of the oppressed class, using his vaulted position as a well paid athlete to make a general complaint about the Federal Government is supported as free speech.

    • Jlso8630

Nah…This has absolutley nothing to do with race what so ever…I guess you have half a brain and justify everything you do not understand with just calling it racist. Hey when the Steelers won the Super Bowl Jerome Harrison did not go to the white house but no one gave him any trouble and his reasons were 110% personal and disrespectful

  • Giants fan

Has zero to do with race, I agree with a lot of what you said tho.

Tim Thomas is from Flint Michigan. I would hope you know what happened to Flint.

Obviously Obama had nothing to do with it, it happened years ago.

I think he didn’t say ENOUGH, so his protest is open to interpretation. He should have said more.

    • http://rippdemup.com/ RiPPa

But his protest was vague. As far as I can tell, it isn’t about Flint specifically.

  • texshelters

Well done. Agree to 99% of this.

I would add that Tim Thomas obviously hates America and democracy by disrespecting it so and he should move to North Korea if he hates out government so much.

What a disrespectful arrogant SOB he is.

If it mattered, I would call for a boycott of the Bruins. If they play the Coyotes this year, perhaps I will go to a game with a sign that says, “Tim Thomas hates America and Democracy.”

    Peace,

“Yep, that’s white privilege for you; it’s side effects are self-righteousness, and amnesia.”
That’s it in a nutshell. May I also conclude that it’s a mental illness.

Once again we have another myopic post from a short-sighted writer. Just because the guy is white and carries an opinion in direct opposition to yours, you have to slame him.

Tell me, if this was a black person espousing the same Libertarian viewpoints, would you be slamming him as well?

    • LMAO

No he wouldnt. Then anyone who disagreed would be the weak word “racist”

    • http://rippdemup.com/ RiPPa

Hello? White Privilige? Is that you??

I’d like to know what part of Tim Thomas’ protest and subsequent response espouses “Libertarian Values”? Because from where I’m sitting, he hasn’t said anything and is pretty vague as to what exactly he’s protesting. Further, I’d posit that if he were Black, he’d have more sense to clarify just what his beef with gov’t is, just liike EVERY Black person that has taken a political stand. But of course White Privilege doesn’t have to be concerned about specifics when it comes to marginalized people. Instead, White Priovilige affords you the opportunity — just like Tim Thomas — to be angry for no damn reason, nor be specific about what the fuck you’re upset about. WEhat’s important is that you’re white, and you’re angry. And as such, people should listen to your newly oppressed ass in this age of Obama. Oh please, get the fuick out of here with that bullshit.

      • NotAnAngryBlackMan

you have no idea what privilege is how do I know? You spell it different every time you use it. Go look it up, it might actually mean something different than you think.

If you think “White Priovilige affords you the opportunity — just like Tim Thomas — to be angry for no damn reason” Then it sounds to me like white “priovilige” means actin black.

        • http://rippdemup.com/ RiPPa

Yep, I’m worjking on how best to “act Black” because, well, my skin color doesn’t actually make me Black. But hey, every brotyha ain’t a brotha is what I’ve been told.

          • NotAnAngryBlackMan

Forget your convictions and do what your rulers tell you is best for the herd. This is liberalism in a nutshell.

  • http://www.depravedmindset.com jujube

Wait, so am I wrong for criticizing Obama for his imperialist agenda? Should I leave that to Glen Ford, and pretend that all is well? Is it foul for me to point out the fact that Obama pushed forward MANY of the same policies as Bush? Please tell me how it is disrespectful to decline an invitation to the white house? Wouldn’t it be more disrespectful to go, and then clog up the toilets as a form of protest?

    • http://rippdemup.com/ RiPPa

As an American citizen you have the right to express your opinions about POTUS. However, you’re not a wealthy white professional athlete who happens to be a member of a championship team with vague criticisms of gov’t. Nope, you’re very far from that. Actually, in the interest of democracy, I encourage you to not be afraid to voice your concerns and critiques.

However, when you’re the member of a team, as a professorial, you sacrifice for the team. This would mean, in this instance, Thomas should have put his team before his personal beefs with gov’t — a beef which isn’t as clear as yours I might add — and went to the White House with the members of his team as do all professionals do. For one, it was an embarrassment for his team, and ownership — they have expressed as much. Even they recognize this to be disrespectful.

So at the end of the day, what you’re talking about is very different from the subject of this post. If anything, the post speaks to white professional athletes being able to do whatever they please without consequence, unlike Black athletes who have suffered as a result of taking a stand of a political nature.

By virtue of you being white, surely you can understand…

At least I hope you can.

      • http://www.depravedmindset.com jujube

You are right that there should not be a double standard when it comes to white vs Black athletes. However, I differ with you on one thing…. I believe that the problem is NOT that a white athlete “gets away with” this form of protest, but that a Black athlete would not, NOT that he is using this forum for exercising his views. In other words, I believe that ANY athlete, team member, business man, etc should be able to, without repercussions, stand up for their beliefs how they see fit. Now, if he came right out and said… I do not like Obama, with no specifics as to why, THEN I could see your point, but he expressed beef with the government as a whole, and ANYONE should have the right to make that statement in the way they choose.

Believe me, it is uncomfortable for me to be in a situation where I find myself defending the actions of a rich white athlete, but you know I would be the first one defending the rights of a Black athlete, actor, etc who chose to take the same form of action.

        • http://rippdemup.com/ RiPPa

The point you’re missing here, is that his protyest of gov’t is baseless. He even said it was not political or partisan. You can’t say you hate gov’t because it’s out of control and not explain just HOW they’re out of control. That’s that bullshit that I’m talking about. His “protest” wasn’t even a protrst because, well, what was he protesting? Further, the fact that people are using the first amendment to give him a pass doesn’t sit well with me.  For example: though I have the right to free speech, me calling you a fat bitch because I don’t like fat women is yet and still disrespectful to you. But this isn’t about Obama as he said, it’s about gov’t. I find it funny that if he truly feels this way that he hasn’t been vocal before now about his displeasure.

Real Brother here.  Excellent article. I’d love to have you on my show to discuss. The Racists have lost their minds. Yesterday reporters criticized Tiger Woods for accepting two million dollars to play in Dubai. White boys have been accepting appearance fees  forever.

    • http://rippdemup.com/ RiPPa

That’s a very good point! There’s a clear and obvious double standard when it comes to how Black professional athletes are treated relatibve to white professional athletes.

  • Reggie

Hey we’ve got rights in this country, he didn’t have to go.  So many athletes who do this, don’t have to go…….we know that.  I do think though that even if you don’t respect the man, you should respect the office.  If your president invites you to The White House, you go out of respect for the office and what it means.

    • http://rippdemup.com/ RiPPa

When a coach puts a curfew in place a player respects it though he’s “free” to break it and do what he/she pleases too. That asshole should have taken his ass to the White House with the rest of his team despite how he feels about gov’t. If he hates gov’t as much as he does, why the fuck then does he even drive on the roads built and maintained by gov’t? Fuck him and all these so-called “angry wjhite men” running around here with their wannabe anarchist asses.
