Same-Day Voter Registration, No Voter ID Requirement for the Republican Iowa Caucus?

Jan 03, 2012 5 Comments by

You know all that voter fraud stuff Republicans are so against that they have to pass new Voter ID laws to prevent? Yeah, you know, the same laws that are set to disenfranchise mostly minority and elderly voters who just so happen to vote for Democrats onj the ballot? Well, it’s kind of peculiar that those very requirements aren’t in place when it comes to today’s Republican Iowa Caucus. I’m not sure how to really take it as far as what message it sends. I  hate to be cynical about this; but, I guess voter fraud isn’t a big deal in Iowa. Yeah, either that or there are no minorities out in Iowa, so there’s no need to suppress their votes. It’s either that or the fact that Republicans are honest unlike those dirty low-down illegally voting Democrats, right? Sure this proves to be a double standard, but you just can’t be too careful, I suppose.

[...] when Iowa Republicans gather across the state to vote on their party’s presidential nominee, one important tool will be available to boost turnout: election day voter registration.

Though Iowa, unlike most states, permits those who haven’t registered (or just need to update their file after a move, for instance) before election day to do so when they show up at their precinct during regular elections, the Huffington Post notesthat the Iowa GOP is in charge of setting the rules for its own caucuses.

Despite nationwide efforts to make voting more difficult, the Republican Party of Iowa decided to buck the trend and allow for on-site registration. In doing so, however, they necessarily undercut the argument being made by GOPers in many other states that election day registration (EDR) invites fraud. (Of course, voters are 39 times more likely to be struck by lightning than commit fraud at the polls, and EDR actually helps prevent already-miniscule levels of fraud.)

Residents of just nine states currently enjoy EDR: Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. However, in a number of these states, the GOP-led war on voting has targeted EDR for repeal, most notably in Maine. Republicans in the Maine legislature passed a bill ridding the state of EDR, only to see the popular program reinstated by referendum in November by an overwhelming 61%-39% margin.

Election day registration will certainly help boost participation in tomorrow’s Iowa caucuses. A 2001 study found that states which employ election day registration (EDR) boost their voter turnout rate by 7 percentage points, without partisan gain for either side. The study found that poorer and less educated voters benefited the most from EDR. ThinkProgressspoke with a number of Maine voters who also lauded the ability to update their registration if they’ve recently moved, particularly because most residents are at work during the day and unable to visit the election clerk during normal business hours.

Had the Iowa GOP followed the lead of their brethren in Maine and elsewhere, thousands of Iowans who will cast their vote tomorrow with the help of election day registration could have been turned away from the polls. (source)

    Interesting.

It’s on and popping in the O-State over the issue of redistricting and voter rights.  Big Bad John has toned down quite a bit since November. But we know that the GOP will stoop to any means to prevent us from voting if possible. So it has cranked up the progressive/liberal base even more to protect this right.

I think that the GOP underestimates the will of the people on this particular issue.

I’m sorry, but how is showing an ID proving that you are who you are is making voting difficult? In Connecticut, everyone has to show a picture ID of some kind as verification before you can vote. How would you like if you went to your local polling place and found out that someone voted using your name? Would you be upset that someone impersonated you or would you simply shrugge your sholders?

An estimated 5 million people will not be able to vote as a result. Voting is a right and not a priviledge – the Conctitition guarantees said right and that should be it. Besides, where the voter fraud that the new laws nre supposed to prevent?

Can you please point to any evidence of voter fraud in this country? Because if there is not a hint of this, which there is not, then it can be easily seen what a fraud this is, and how this follows the Republican belief that less people voting is to their advantage.

I thought all the Gore Democrats were crying voter fraud when Bush won!
How come Acorn disbanded in disgrace?
How about the Al Frankenstein win?
How can anyone not have I.D in 2012? Sounds suspicious!
How come the white poor, “who might vote Republican” aren’t up in arms protesting and on the news?
