Bruce Jenner was once hailed as the greatest athlete in the world and later became a reality television star with one of the world’s most famous families. Now, the former Olympian is revealing a secret that has caused him turmoil for decades.

“For all intents and purposes, I’m a woman,” Jenner told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in an exclusive interview that aired Friday in a special two-hour edition of ABC News’ “20/20.”

“People look at me differently. They see you as this macho male, but my heart and my soul and everything that I do in life — it is part of me,” Jenner, 65, said. “That female side is part of me. That’s who I am.”

Of course, this post sounds transphobic and could be interpreted as me just being ignorant. However, I’m going to need someone to educate me of this. How do you wake up one day as a man, then decide to transform into being a woman, but you still like women and consider yourself to be heterosexual? Hey, I’m all for someone choosing to identify as someone from the opposite sex. In fact, personally, I think that someone being transgender speaks to the greatness that is America in the context of freedom, apple pie, and some other often repeated third thing that celebrates America. But I’m confused, y’all. I won’t dare go as far as saying or to suggest that Bruce Jenner is as confused about his sexuality as I am. But hey, can you help me out with this?

Perhaps at the end of the day, whether Bruce Jenner has a penis or not doesn’t really matter. After all, it’s not like he’s currently anyone’s favorite male pornstar; or, a male athlete still competing at the Olympic level. If he was, like his current story, it would be fodder for media outlets for all the wrong reasons. Why? Because it would be kind of messed up if Bruce Jenner had to return his Olympic medals because he lied and pretended to be a man when he kicked ass by beating male athletes back in the day. Which, wouldn’t be a stretch considering the number female athletes like Caster Semenya, who have had their gender questioned and tested, because of their success.

But beyond all of that drama, what he’s doing is cool. As some say, it shines a light on the choices many transgender folks make – many of them are life altering in more ways than one. However, as awesome as this all may be for the LGBT community and their allies, what sucks is that Bruce Jenner is, in fact, a wealthy privileged white man. Why? Because, at the end of the day, I’m pretty sure that there are many people, who unlike Bruce Jenner, lack the financial resources to follow through with such a change. So as much as we celebrate Bruce Jenner for his courage, it’s important to understand, that there are millions out there who may be just as courageous, who sit at the lowest rung on the ladder of privilege, who are fighting internal struggles with sexuality and identity as we speak. That said, maybe while Bruce Jenner still has a penis for now at least, it might not be a bad idea to tell the stories of less privileged people.

It’s sad that we look to celebrity to amplify societal issues. I hate that it’s that way, but it’s the way that it is. That said, at least for now, aren’t you glad that Bruce Jenner still has a penis, because, of course, that’s the burning question everyone seems to want to know. Which isn’t that bad considering that he’s the father of Kylie Jenner, the young socialite credited for convincing young girls to suck air out of shot glasses in an attempt to get their lips bigger, because of course, cultural appropriation is the new thing. Thanks to Bruce Jenner’s daughter Kylie, “the poors” won’t have to spend much for aesthetic changes to their bodies, even as ridiculous as it sounds.

In the end, I applaud Bruce Jenner for having the courage to do what’s comfortable, and best for him. Whether we fully understand his choice is a subject for debate and education. At the end of the day, his choice is as revolutionary much like coming out of the closet, and should be applauded. Whether you respect his choice isn’t and shouldn’t be a concern. But, hey, that’s just me being a black man trapped in a black man’s body.

Lemme be clear on something: I fully support the human rights of all incarcerated prisoners. Yes, I believe that like any free man or woman, they too have the right to be treated fairly; and more importantly, they shouldn’t be exposed to, or have to deal with inhumane treatment.

Yes, even as hard as it may be to police, prisoners should be protected from prison rape which is a huge problem in and of itself. We joke about that type of stuff on the outside, but being violated sexually even in prison ain’t cool; and it damn sure ain’t funny. No matter the gender of the victim, it’s a violation.

DILLWYN, Va. – Crouched in her cell, Ophelia De’lonta hoped three green disposable razors from the prison commissary would give her what the Virginia Department of Corrections will not — a sex change.

It had been several years since she had felt the urges, but she had been fighting them for weeks. But like numerous other times, she failed to get rid of what she calls “that thing” between her legs, the last evidence she was born a male.

Months after the October castration attempt, De’lonta filed a federal lawsuit Friday claiming the state has failed its duty to provide adequate medical care because it won’t give her the operation.

She says the surgery is needed to treat her gender identity disorder, a mental illness in which people believe they were born the wrong gender.

If she wins, De’lonta would be the nation’s first inmate to receive a state-funded sex change operation. Similar lawsuits have failed in a handful of other states, and lawmakers in some states are trying to ban the use of taxpayer money for the operations.

If she loses, she says she will continue to try self-surgery — acknowledging another attempt could kill her.

“That’s a possibility,” the 50-year-old said during a recent prison interview, pausing then smiling contently. “But at the end I would have peace.”See, this is another case of giving a muthafucka too much rope and now he wants to be a fucking cowboy. No seriously; according to the story this cat won a court order in 2004 to have hormone pills administered to him. Well shit, is it that easy in Virginia? Lemme get this right: in Virginia prisons, religious practice be damned, they’ve banned men from having and growing beards – which is unconstitutional. But an inmate can wake up one day and petition the court for hormone pills to make them feel and appear like the opposite sex?

Experts say that De’lonta’s behavior is an unusual — but not surprising — manifestation of her disorder. At least 12 other inmates in Idaho, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New York, Virginia, Oregon, Kentucky and North Carolina have castrated themselves over the past 14 years, and several others have tried, said psychiatry professor George R. Brown at East Tennessee State University.

“This is not a choice. Transsexuals are born and not made,” said Brown, an expert in gender identity disorder. “If you didn’t have this condition, why would you want to have your genitals removed, if not by a competent surgeon but by your own hand?”

While many with gender identity disorder wish to get rid of their genitals, the majority never act — often because hormones and other treatments help make them feel more comfortable, Brown said.

[…] Treatment is more readily available outside prison, though dozens of other inmates nationwide have won the right to hormones and psychotherapy. Based on counts of inmates with gender identity disorder in a half dozen states and personal correspondence with inmates during his research, Brown estimates that at least 750 of the more than 2 million prisoners nationwide had gender identity disorder in 2007, his latest count.

Inmates in Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Colorado, California and Idaho also have sued to try to get the surgery, making arguments similar to De’lonta’s that denying treatment violates the Eighth Amendment’s protection against cruel and unusual punishment. All but one of those have failed; a decision in the decade-old Massachusetts lawsuit by convicted killer Michelle — born Robert — Kosilek is still pending.

Kosilek says that for her, sex reassignment surgery is a medical necessity, not a frivolous desire to change her appearance.

“Everybody has the right to have their health care needs met, whether they are in prison or out on the streets. People in the prisons who have bad hearts, hips or knees have surgery to repair those things,” Kosilek told The Associated Press in a recent phone interview from a state prison in Norfolk, Mass.

“My medical needs are no less important or more important than the person in the cell next to me.”

Federal courts have said prisons must provide adequate medical care, and that they must protect inmates from themselves. But correctional officials and lawmakers balk at using taxpayer money for sex-change operations that can cost up to $20,000.Sounds kinda ass-backwards to me, but this is America. But hey, in America people are taught to die for freedom. So I suppose there’s nothing wrong with dying in a prison cell from bleeding to death after cutting off your own penis just because the state refuses to take up your request for a sex change.

Forget a hunger strike, son; nothing will get you more attention than threatening to chop your own dick off in prison. Good strategy, but good luck with getting a tax-payer-funded sex change. Nope, no such luxury, pal.

Sorry Ophelia, stick to the Clarence Williams III look-alike thing while on lock down; get that sex change when you’re free man or the woman you identify as. Truth is, if you were free, I’d doubt you’d chop ya choad off on your own, so miss me with that bullshit. Calling it a “disorder” isn’t gonna make it happen.
