With champions of racial equality like Rush Limbaugh around, who needs a conversation on race? In the wake of the George Zimmerman Not Guilty verdict, all week I’ve heard it mentioned that we’re in need of a national conversation on race. As one who absolutely champions for freedom, justice, and equality I applaud and urge such a conversation. As I see it, the only thing we need to figure out now is on what day, time, and at what venue do we intend to have this conversation. I think somewhere neutral should suffice; but in this crazy country of ours, I’m afraid that no such place exists. Not that I’m overly pessimistic or cynical, but haven’t we been having a conversation ob race in this country since the first slave ship landed? Of course the problem is that “certain people” haven’t been listening; and I doubt they will. More to the point, if they’re like Rush Limbaugh they’ll never listen.

The truth is that as long as men like Rush Limbaugh exist with the ability to influence the minds of many via media, nothing productive will come of a conversation on race. If you doubt what I say, pay attention to a bit of Limbaugh’s antics this week on his radio show.

Is Rush Limbaugh Racist?

Let me start by saying that I don’t know whether Rush Limbaugh is racist. No seriously, I just don’t know. I mean, it isn’t like he has ever uttered the words, “I hate niggers,” in public or on his radio program. I don’t know whether saying that explicitly in those exact words is a daily challenge for Limbaugh. But, if I had to guess, I would say that there’s a slight chance that he might be racist. What I would say is that he is an intelligent businessman. Why? Because he has managed to parlay what little skill he possesses into a multi-million dollar career. And how did he do it? Easy. Limbaugh knows that there are a bunch of idiots in this country who for some sick reason feels the need to be reminded that they are superior to every minority and their white liberal enablers. And who are these people I speak of? They are the people who “want their country back!”

They are the people who will hang on Limbaugh’s every word like it the gospel. As an example, check out what he had to say on his show this week in the wake of President Obama’s remarks regarding Trayvon Martin, racial profiling, and those Stand Your Ground laws around the country.

This from The Rush Limbaugh Show:

“You know, folks, I have to tell you something. This, this white guilt, it’s time for all this white guilt to end. I know it won’t because I know that most people are scared to death and live lives totally immersed in fear because that’s what other people want them to live like, but I’m sick of it. White guilt is doing nothing for anybody, and white guilt is not solving anything. And besides that, a little history lesson for you. If any race of people should not have guilt about slavery, it’s Caucasians. The white race has probably had fewer slaves and for a briefer period of time than any other in the history of the world.

Now, sadly, we’re not talking about the rest of the world when the civil rights coalition gets ginned up. They’re talking about America and slavery. And that can’t be denied; it happened. But, compared to the kind of slavery that still exists in the rest of the world and has existed, by no means was it anywhere near the worst. The Chinese, the Arabs, black Africans, in fact, we forget about it. Even American Indians were constantly warring against tribes, other tribes for slaves. You know how many wars were fought for slaves, to claim them?

My gosh, folks, the ancient Israelites were all slaves. The Exodus, the war, everything. There have been so many wars fought over this. Ancient Rome went to war to win more slaves. We’re pikers compared to the rest of humanity throughout human history. Yes, even American Indians — I know the image is that they were the embodiment of perfection. They were just cool and fine until we arrived, and then it was all over for ’em. But even they were constantly warring against other tribes for slaves. It was their primary reason for going to war.

But despite all that, no other race has ever fought a war for the purpose of ending slavery, which we did. Nearly 600,000 people killed in the Civil War. It’s preposterous that Caucasians are blamed for slavery when they’ve done more to end it than any other race, and within the bounds of the Constitution to boot. And yet white guilt is still one of the dominating factors in American politics. It’s exploited, it’s played upon, it is promoted, used, and it’s unnecessary.” – Rush Limbaugh, July 22nd, 2013

Listen for yourself:

Okay, so did you get that? Yes, according to Limbaugh white folks should feel no guilt over slavery because, well, those slave-owning nice guys were a lot kinder than other slave owners around the world. Yep, never mind that whole near extinction of Native Americans: yes, even they were more savage than the Europeans who landed on Plymouth Rock 00 hell, all white folks got out of the deal was turkey…. but I digress.

rush-limbaugh-whites-should-not-feel-guilty-about-slaveryNow don’t get me wrong, it’s not like black folk sit around waiting for daily visits from random guilty white people bearing apologies and gifts. You know like rims, gold teeth, or the occasional trinket in the form of legal tender with the faces of weird-looking white dudes on it. No, in the immortal words of Sweet Brown, “Ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat!” No, we’ve also given up on that whole forty acres and a mule thing. Last time I checked all anyone black with the exception of black republicans wanted was to enjoy the same God-given equality he wrote down on a piece of paper and gave to the white folk. Okay, so we had to be written into said piece of paper to be recognized as humans, but you get the picture.

But no, leave it up to Limbaugh the old sage of whiteness. According to him, white folks woke up one day with some morality. Yep, they went to war and killed each other for us;. Why? Just so that the descendants of slaves could have the right to be bitten by racist German Shepherds; and, for them to be sprayed with water hoses while singing thanks and praises to God-fearing Caucasians.

So you see, I’m all for having a national conversation on race — yes, I’m all for it. But, as long as Limbaugh is around and makes millions pushing thise tripe, their will never be an honest conversation on race. And to that point: What if anything productive can come of said conversation.
