Slaves in the Carolina region grew their own food and sold their own produce, at least at one point in US history. It had something to do with rice being tended too differently than tobacco. Tobacco took longer, they had to pick the bugs...or something...Like I said, idk how long this lasted, if laws later prevented them from doing so or what, but it did happen, and is evidence that slaves were self-motivated and industrious and not content to be dependent on their oppressors.
